• Introduce and explain
• Obtain consent and organise stop signal
• Ask patient to stand
  
  • Palpate any lumps, try to reduce them, feel cough impulse
  • Locate lumps in relation to inguinal ligament
  • Try and get above scrotal lumps (?inguinal in origin)
• Ask patient to lie down
• Note differences in lumps
• Consider special tests (transillumination, palpating up inguinal canal)
