Who does it affect?
A
Men more than women, also tend to happen as you get older, as the muscles get weaker

What causes it?
A
Defect in abdominal wall (muscle)

What risk factors are there?
A
Straining on the toilet
Carrying or pushing heavy loads
Persistent heavy cough

How does it present?
A
Swelling or lump in groin, or as an enlarged scrotum
It may be painful

Treatment
A
Surgery if painful, causes severe or persistent symptoms, or if any serious complications develop (eg strangulation).

Conditions that would present similarly
A
Sometimes a hydrocele in the tunica albicans
Very bad varicose veins
Lipoma.
