what is the inguinal canal?
a short passage that extends inferiorly and medially through the inferior abdominal wall
superior and parallel to the inguinal ligament
where is the inguinal ligament?
it runs from the anterior, superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle
what does the inguinal ligament mark?
the boundary between the abdomen and the thing
what is the inguinal ligament made of?
it is an inferior thickening of the external oblique muscle
where is the inguinal canal?
just above the medial hall of the inguinal ligament
it lies along the ingunla ligaments superior border
what is in the inguinal canal?
spermatic cord - males
round ligament of the uterus - females
blood and lymphatic vessels
ilioingual nerve
what happens to the tissue that will become the gonads during development?
it is established in the abdominal wall and descends through the abdominal cavity
what is the gubernaculum?
a fibrous cord of tissue
it attaches the inferior portion of the gonads to the future scrotum or la ia
it guides gonads during descent
what does the gubernaculum become in adults?
males - testicular ligament
females - round ligament of the uterus
what is the inguinal canal during development?
the pathway for the testes to leave the abdominal cavity and enter the scrotum
what do the testes do to the layers of the abdominal wall during their descent?
they pull them along
this contributes to the layers of the spermatic cord
where is the deep inguinal ring?
just superior to the hallway point along the inguinal ligament
what is the superficial inguinal ring?
just superior and lateral to the pubic tubercle
where would a direct hernia be?
directly through the abdominal wall
medial to the inferior epigastric artery
through Hasselbach’s triangle to the superficial inguinal ring
run parallel to the spermatic cord
where would an indirect hernia be?
indirect hernias use the inguinal canal and deep inguinal ring
they are lateral to the inferior epigastric arty
pass through the superficial ring
are within the spermatic cord or layers of the abdomen wall
