Quartz cuvettes

A

Optical materials used in FTIR due to their transparency in infrared region.

KBr: used for solid samples
NaCl/KBr: used for liquid phase FTIR
Diamond: ATR setups (Attenuated Total Reflectance.)
Quartz cuvettes: used for NIR-FTIR in aqueous samples.

Q

Describe the process of FTIR?

A

A sample is exposed to infrared radiation.
Some infrared light is absorbed while some passes though.
The absorbed light causes bond vibrations that is converted to absorption spectrum with absorption peaks at unique wavelengths.
