Infrared praticle Flashcards
1
Q
Infrared waves:
A
- The human eye cannot see these waves.
2
Q
Praticle:
A
Equipment:
- Leslie’s cube: Can be used to see how much infrared is emmited from different substances.
- 4 different substances: Shiny Metallic, White surface, Shiny Black, Matt black.
Method:
1) Fill the leslies cube with hot water.
2) Point an infrared detector at each 4 of the surfaces and record the amount of infrared emmited
IMPORTANT NOTE: keep same distance between the leslies cube and infrared detector (makes measrurments repeatable).
3
Q
Results:
A
- Mat Black Surface: Emits most infrared radiation.
- Followed by Shiny black and then the white surface.
- Shiny metallic= emits the least infrared radiation.
4
Q
What happens if you don’t have an infrared detector?
A
- Use a therometer with the bulb painted black.
- Resolution of the thereometer is lesser than the infrared detector.
- Resolution= smallest change that can be detected.
Problems:
- Not be able to detect a large difference between the surfaces using a thermometer.
- Infrared dector= more likely to detect a difference.
