Infra Flashcards
What are the 4 stimuli of the dance?
‘Infra’ comes from the Latin word below (life beneath the surface of a city.)
The wasteland by T.S. Eliot
The 2007 London bombings on British transportation
What lies beneath the surface of a city
What are the 2 choreographic intentions?
Seeing below the surface of things
Human relationships
What are the 3 choreographic approaches?
SHOW - a phrase the the cast
MAKE - a phrase on a target dancer or dancers
TASK - set a choreographic task for the dancer to complete or pose a problem for them to solve
What are the different genres in the dance?
Ballet
Contemporary
What types of lighting are used?

What is most of the lighting like in the dance?
Soft and blurred
Apart from in the middle of the dance where the dancers perform 6 duets in harshly lit boxes
How does the lighting communicate the 3 stimuli and the choreographic intent?
Stimuli…
Below the surface of a city - lighting shapes on the floor look as if someone is looking at the dancers from above.
The London bombings - orange in one of the solos reflects fire and heat
The waste land - blurred edges suggest fog (apparent in the poem)
Choreographic intent…
Different human relationships - lighting changes with each section and different relationships.
How does the costume in infra communicate 2 of the stimuli and the choreographic intent?
Stimuli…
Below the surface of a city - black and grey costumes suggest darkness of the underground (smoke and industrial dirt.)
The waste land - the colour are repressive and gloomy, like the poem.
Choreographic intent…
Different human relationships - each dancer is wearing an individual design, the costumes are also personal wear, not outdoor wear, to reveal their personality.
What is the staging for the dance?
It’s an empty black box
Upstage there is an LED screen suspended high above the stage
On the screen we see the outline of people walking
Roughly how many people are on the LED screen in each section?
Start = 1 - 4 Duet = 1 - 4 Green duet = 1 - 4 Rectangles duets = 1 - 4 Male solo = 5+ Ensemble = 10+ Blue trio = 5+ Collapse / crowd = 5+ End = 0
How does the staging communicate the 2 stimuli and the choreographic intent?
Stimuli…
Below the surface of a city = the blackness suggests the underground and the dancers are physically below the LED figures.
The London bombings - the darkness reflects the bombings on the underground.
Choreographic intent…
Different human relationships- the LED figures show no emotion while the dancers show lots. Symbolises how the surface of humans are just a facade.
What are the different aural settings in the dance?
Sound effect is (trains, morse code, radio static, muffled speech)
Violin and strings
Soft piano
When do we hear sound effects?
Throughout the dance
There is a distant relationship with the music
When do we hear violin and strings?
Throughout
There is a close relationship with the music
The music is continuous, like the dancers
When do we hear soft piano?
Trio of 2 women and 1 man (blue section)
There is a close relationship with the music
Movement is slow and gentle like the music, dancers hold still of the pauses.
How does the aural setting communicate the 2 stimuli and the choreographic intent?
Stimuli…
Below the surface of a city - muffled speech seems as if it is coming from above and radio static suggests there is no signal underground.
The London bombings - train whistles and radio static reflects the bombings on the underground. The morse code could be a distress signal.
Choreographic intent…
Different human relationships- the music mirrors the emotions of the different relationships.
