Information Processing Flashcards
Section 5
What is data
Unstructured information such as texts, observations and symbols
What is information
Processed, organized and structured data
What is information Processing
The handling, management and transformation of data to produce meaningful information
State 4 characteristics include
Input, processing, output-Automation-Speed and accuracy-Data Integrity
What are 3 forms of information processing
Automation, Process control, Commercial data processing,
What is process control
This is used in indutrial environments to monitor and control machinery and production processes
Automation
The use of machinery, software and AI to perform tasks with minimal human intervention
Commercial Data processing
Used in business and finance for handling large scale transactions and records
What is a data source
This refers to where data originates before being processed into useful information
Source documents
The original records where data is first recorded before being entered into system for processing
Turnaround document
Document being generated by computer, printed, sent out for user completion then returned to for further processing
Machine readable
A document that is formatted so that computers can easily read and process it without human intervention
Human readable
Written in a format that people can easily read & understand
Data Verification
Ensures data is entered correctly by comparing or rechecking it
Give 3 examples of data verification
Double entry, screen confirmation, proof reading
What is data validation
Automatically checking that data follows predefined rules
State 5 examples of data validation
Range check, format check, presence check, length check, check digit
