Data communication Flashcards
What is Data Communication
The transmission of data from one location to another for direct use of for further processing
Bandwidth
A bandwidth determines the volume of data that can be transmitted in a given time
What are the three types of Bandwidth
Narrowband, voice-band, broadband
Narrowband
This channel is almost obsoletefor example, a telegraph system, can transmit data at slow speeds of between 10 and 30 bits per second
Voiceband
Can transmit data at the rate of up to 64 Kbps. A telephone line is a voiceband, and is one of the most widely used of methods of transferring data
Broadband
Can transmit large volumes of data at speeds of over 8Mbps. Coaxial cables
What is the name given to the medium that transmits data
A line
Simplex
A line that permits data to flow in only one direction. (You can send and receive data but not both)
Half-duplex
This line can alternately send and receive data. (This means that at any particular time, you can send data but not receive it, or receive data but not send it)
Full-duplex
This line can simultaneously send and receive data.
Network
A network is a group of two or more computers linked together so that they can share resources (hardware, software and data)and communicate with each other.
What are the 5 groups of computer networks
LAN, WAN, Internet, Intranet, Extranet
What is LAN
Local Area Network is a collection of microcomputers, such as in an office that can share peripherals, files and programs and communicate with each other on the network.
What is a server
A server is a computer/device that provides a service to another computer and its user
