childhoods
attachment type is associated with the quality of peer relationships in childhood
- securely attached babies tend to go on to form the best quality childhood relationships, whereas insecure ones tend to have later friendship difficulties
role of the internal working model
a child with bad experiences of their first attachment will bring these bad experiences into relationships later on in life
- insecure avoidant or resistant
- struggle to form relationships in the first place
- babies who experience a loving one will assume this is how all relationships to be
- will then seek out functional relationships
limtiation: validity issues
early attachment is assesed retrospectively
- most research between early and later aren’t longitudional
- ask pts about early relationships with their parents and identify attachment from this
- suffers from reliability and difficult to tell if early or adult attachment is being assesed
- may be confounded with other factors and are therefore meaningless
strenght
explains why some people struggle to form relationships who have experienced trauma or abuse at childhood subconsciously
