What is Foundation?
An introduction to the activity
Basic skills are learnt eg Primary School PE lessons
Eg Footy in the Park
What is Participation?
When young people start to enjoy a specific activity and participate in it regularly eg attending an extra curricular sports club
What is Performance?
Where Specific skills are developed through coaching and competition competing at regional level
What is Excellence?
This is the Peak of the pyramid where people are competing at National and International level, relatively few achieve this.
What are the Six main influences on you taking part in sport?
People Image Cultural Factors Resources Health and Well being Socio-economic
Explain the ‘People’ influence
Family- Participate in the same sport family do
Peers- People who are the same age playing with have great influence (“Peer Pressure”)
Role Models- Role Models inspire people to take part in sport
Explain the ‘Image’ influence
- Fashion (sports clothing is often worn as fashion items having influence on people(equipment as well)
- Media Coverage (The popularity of activity on TV eg Wimbledon)
Explain the ‘Cultural Factors’
- Age (Reduces what sport you can play eg Job)
- Disability can limit participation but can be adapted with new technology
- Gender eg Males are known for Football and Females are known for Netball
- Gender “only certain races are good at certain sports eg Usain Bolt sprint races”
Explain the ‘Resources’ influence
- Ability and Location (Depending where you live)
- Access Sports Facility’s
- Time
Explain the ‘Health and Well Being’ influence
- Illness (temporarily)
- Health Problems (Doctor may need to be consulted)
Explain the ‘Socio-Economic’ Influence
- Cost of facilities and equipment
- Perceived Status of Activity prevents people from taking part in Sport because of persons position in Society
Explain some Initiatives that help people get involved in Sport
- PE and Sport Strategy for young people (PESSYP) 5 hours of sport for young people
- Sport England created a Start,Stay,Succeed Strategy
- Youth Sport Trust ( Sports Leaders )
- Top Link Trust ( aged 14 - 16 involved in Sport)
