Research support
• Fearson and Roisman- organised attachment is strongly associated with later mental disorder
• Secure attachment conveys advantages
Counterpoint
• not all evidence supports- Regensburg did a longitudinal study and found no evidence of continuity.
• Not clear to what extent the quality of earlier attach
Validity issues with retrospective studies
• most research is not longitudinal
• Relies on honesty and accurate perception
• Hard to know if childhood or adult attachment is being assessed
• Could be confounded with other factors making it meaningless
Confounding variables
• Could be genetically influenced or personality could affect
• Never be entirely sure if it is another factor affecting it
Balancing opportunity and risk
• insecure does not inevitably cause increased risk
• Knowing the attachment status could intervene
