Influence of early attachment Flashcards
what is the continuity hypothesis?
when children attachment types are reflected in their later relationships
based upon the internal working model where and infants primary attachment forms a model (template) for future relationships
what is type A behaviour?
too involved or emotionally close
what is type C behaviour?
controlling or argumentative
what did The Minnesota study (2005) do?
followed participants from infancy to late adolescence and found continuity between early attachment and later emotional/social behaviour
what did Hartup et al (1993) say?
children with a secure attachment type are more popular at nursery and engage more in social interactions with other children
insecurely attached children tend to be more repaints in teachers for interaction and emotional support
what was Hazen and Shaver’s (1987) Love Quiz?
measured attachment type with their parents, and assessed individual beliefs about love
they analysed the first 620 replies from the newspaper responses, and classier them using Ainsworths attachment types
what did secure types describe their love as?
happy
trusting
accepting
happy to be close to others
had positive images of their mother being dependable and caring
what did anxious resistant adults describe their love as?
involving obsession, desire for reciprocation, emotional hugs and lows, worry their partners don’t love them
conflicting memories of their mother being positive and rejecting
what did anxious avoidant adults describe their love as?
feared intimacy, jealousy, believed they did not need love to be happy, uncomfortable depending on others
remember their mother being cold and rejecting
what are the limitations of hazen and shaver?
self report measures
correlational study
retrospective data
responders were self-selecting
influence may be exaggerated
what are the strengths of hazen and shaver?
Supporting research from longitudinal studies, Simpson found participants assessed as securely at
age 1 had higher social competence as children and were more attached to partners later on
what did Bailey et al (2007) find?
the majority of women had the same attachment classification both to their babies and their own mothers
what did Zimmerman (2000) study?
disputes the internal working model
assessed infant attachment types and adolescent attachment to parents. he found there was very little relationship between quality of infant and adolescent attachment
what did Clarke and Clarke (1998) do?
described the influence of infant attachment on later relationships probabilistic.
People are not doomed to always have bad relationships just because they had attachment problems.
They just have a greater risk of problems. There is a further issue that by emphasising this risk we become too
pessimistic about people’s futures.
