influence of abiotic factors Flashcards
How does light intensity affect a grassland ecosystem?
Light intensity is lower near a hedge. This means that there is less grass growing at the base of a hedge compared with the middle of a field.
How does soil type affect a grassland ecosystem?
Soils can be sandy, clay or loam-based.
Sandy soils contain large soil particles and all easy root penetration and good drainage.
Clay soils have small particles, which results in difficult root penetration and poor drainage.
Loam soils are a mixture of sand and clay and provide ideal conditions for grassland plants.
How does pH of soil affect a grassland ecosystem?
Most grassland plants prefer a neutral or slightly basic soil pH. Acid soils are mainly associated with boglands and support a totally different community of plants.
