Inflammation Flashcards
What are the five cardinal signs of inflammation?
Heat, Redness, Swelling, Pain and Loss of Function
What are the four steps in the inflammation process?
Change in circulation in blood, changes in vessel wall permeability, WBC response, release of soluble mediators
How do arterioles react to injurious stimulus?
vasoconstiction for a few seconds followed by vasodialation
Why do the vessel walls of capillaries increase permeability in response to inflammation?
- Increase pressure inside congested vessels 2. lowering of O2 2/2 slowing of circulation 3. adhesion of leukocytes and platelets to endothelial cells 4. release of soluble mediators
The mediators of inflammation belong to what two classes?
Plasma derived and cell derived
What mediator of inflammation is released from platelets and mast cells and basophils and provokes a contraction of endothelial cells of venules?
Histamine
What does the contraction of endothelial cells caused by histamine cause?
increase in permeability, which leads to fluids in the interstitial spaces
what mediator of inflammation increases vascular permeability and can also incite pain?
Bradykinin
