What are the 2 types of infertility?
- primary infertility
2. secondary infertility
What is primary infertility?
When someone who has never conceived a child in the past has difficulty conceiving
What is secondary infertility?
When someone has had one or more pregnancies in the past, but is having difficulty conceiving again
What are the 3 causes of infertility?
- female causes - 45%
- male causes - 30%
- unexplained infertility - 25%
What are the 3 main female causes of infertility?
- ovulation disorders
- uterus and fallopian tube disorders
- age
What is an ovulation disorder?
When something causes women to stop releasing eggs entirely
What are examples of uterus and fallopian tube disorders?
This is when the uterus or fallopian tubes are damaged
e.g. scarring from surgery, endometritis, fibroids, infections (STIs)
When does the biggest decrease in fertility occur?
During the mid-thirties
What are the 3 main male causes of infertility?
- semen
- ejaculation disorders
- alcohol
How can problems with the semen lead to infertility?
- decreased number of sperm or none at all
- decreased mobility
- abnormal morphology
When will a couple be referred for treatment?
- of reproductive age
- not conceived after 1 year of unprotected vaginal sexual intercourse
- in the absence of any known cause of infertility
What are the pre-treatment guidelines for increasing chances of fertility?
- reduce alcohol
- stop smoking
- avoid caffeinated beverages
- reduce BMI to below 30 (men and women)
- increase BMI to above 19
- avoid tight underwear
- folic acid supplementation
What investigations are involved after referral for treatment?
- semen analysis
- assessment of ovulation
- look for tubal damage and uterine abnormalities
- screening for infections such as chlamydia
