Inferential Testing Flashcards
Type 1 error
False positive
Accepting hypothesis in error when it should have been rejected
Usually occurs when the significance level is too lenient (10%)
Type 2 error
False negative
Accepting a null hypothesis when it should have been rejected
Usually occurs if the significant level is to stringent (e.g. 1%)
Probability
Probability results occurred by chance
General level of 0.05 (5% chance)
Significance
If results show there’s a less than 5% chance, results occurred by chance, results are significant. Showing a significant correlation / difference
Null hypothesis then rejected.
If there was a greater than 5% probability the results were by chance, results are not significant, no significant correlation / difference
