Infective Endocarditis Flashcards
1
Q
General
A
Bacteremia –> bacteria invades valve –> Vegetation formation
Vegetation: Bacteria/Necrosis/Cell Debris/Inflmm Cells
2
Q
Classification of IE
A
1) Acute EC:
- Highly Virulent (staph A) + Normal Valve destruction
2) Subacute EC:
- Low Virulence (strep.viridens) + previously deformed valve
- ABX therapy => Recovery
3
Q
Pathogenesis
A
Usually Immune system deals with the bacteria but if there are Pre-disposing factors such as:
- RF
- Cardiac Malformation
- Prosthetic Valves
- Host Factors:
- malignancy
- alchohol/IV drug use
- DM
4
Q
Causative Agents
A
- Staph . A
- Strep Viridens
- HACEK (hemophilus/ Actinobact/ Cardiobacter/ Eikenella/ Kingella)
5
Q
Source of Micro-organism
A
- Dental/ Surgical Procedure
- Injection of Contaminated Material
- Portal Entry
6
Q
Complication of Infective Endocarditis
A
- Embolization
- Perforation of Valve
- Ring Abscess
- AG in Circ –> IC formation:
- Renal Failure
- Vasculitis
- Joint problems
