what is pediculosis and epidemiology
its an infection of the hairy parts of the body or clothing with the eggs, larvae or adults of lice.
most often seen in children and women and in those in poverty and neglect conditions
what are the symptoms of pediculosis
- primary complaint is itchyness or pruritus, this may not occur for 4 to 6 weeks
- lice on scalp
- lice eggs
- sores from scratching
what are the 3 types and there causes
pediculosis capitis - The causative agent of head lice infestation is the human head louse. Head lice are parasitic insects that primarily infest the scalp and hair of humans.
pediculosis corposis - Body lice infestations are associated with unhygienic conditions and overcrowding, typically affecting individuals who live in close quarters with limited access to proper sanitation facilities.
crabs/ phthiriasis pubis - transmitted by direct contact usually sexual
what are the treatments for pediculosis
head and body lice -malation and phenothrin are the most common agents, if failed insecticide is used
body lice - washing and drying of clothing.
what is scabies and who does it effect
intensely itchy rash caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. it affects all races and any social class, most common in chrildren and young adults.
what is the etiology of scapies
- spread through prolonged close contact or by sexual contact
how does it present scabies
- it presents with itchy red papules, that can occur anywhere on the skin
- often between fingers and toes, on palms and soles, wrists, male genitalia, around nipples and umbilicus
- linear or curved skin burrows, but not always present
scabies treatment
- topical scabicide
- washing or cleaning of recently warn clothes
what is herpes simplex virus
- Herpes simplex virus (HSV), known as herpes, is a common infection that can cause painful blisters or ulcers
what are the two types of HSV and there individual areas of infection
HSV1 - major cause of herpes stomatitis, herpes labialis, keratoconjunctivitis and encephalitis
- primary infection may go unnoticed or may produce a severe inflammatory reaction leading to painful ulcers
- latent un the trigeminal ganglia
HSV2 - causes genital herpes and may also cause systemic infection in an immunocompromised host.
- symptoms of genital herpes
- latent in sacral ganglia, can produce a radiculomyelopathy, pain in groin, buttocks and upper thighs
