Chlamydia trachomatis
This sexually transmitted infection can either be asymptomatic or may present with dysuria, cervicitis and a clear vaginal discharge. It is diagnosed by a nucleic acid amplification test. The first line antibiotic is doxycycline.
Pregnant woman - Azithromycin
Trichomonas vaginalis
This can cause dysuria and cervicitis and is also diagnosed by a nucleic acid amplification test.. However, the discharge tends to be green-ish and the treatment is with metronidazole.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
This shares many of the same symptoms as Chlamydia trachomatis and can also be diagnosed via a nucleic acid amplification test. However, the treatment is with ceftriaxone.
Gardnerella vaginalis
This is a typical cause of bacterial vaginosis. A ‘fishy’ odour is commonly described in this disorder and the treatment is with metronidazole.
