Epstein Barr mononucleosis
Epstein Barr mononucleosis is a viral illness characterized by
1. fever
2. lymphadenopathy
3. pharyngitis
maculopapular rash develops in 80% of patients treated with ampicillin
pt may also have LUQ pain secondary to splenomegaly and are at risk for splenic rupture
Diagnosis and Management of Epstein Barr mononucelosis
monspot test – test for heterophile antibodies
appears in first 2 wks of illness, usually slow decline over 6 months
CBC: atypical lymphocytes often constitute > 10% of total leukocyte count
Management: supportive–abx NOT HELPFUL
analgesics, increased fluid intake, rest
warm salt water gargles for sore throat
limit activity–experts recommend that athletes not participate in contact or vigorous sports activities for at least first 3 - 4 wks of illness
