What is the immune system?
Protects the body using special cells.
What are microorganisms?
Tiny living things you can’t see without a microscope.
What is a pathogen?
Germ that causes disease.
What is a host?
A bigger organism that carries smaller ones inside.
What does contagious mean?
Can spread from person to person.
What is an infection?
When germs grow in the body.
What are symptoms?
Signs that someone is sick.
What is a disease?
When the body doesn’t work properly.
What are infectious diseases?
Caused by germs (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites).
Can spread to other people. Examples: Flu, TB, Fungal infections, Tapeworm.
What are non-infectious diseases?
Not caused by germs.
Can’t spread to others. Caused by genes, environment, or lifestyle. Examples: Diabetes, Cancer, Alzheimer’s.
What is the first line of the body’s defense system?
Skin, mucus, stomach acid.
What is the second line of the body’s defense system?
Swelling, fever.
What is the third line of the body’s defense system?
Antibodies, memory cells.
How to prevent infectious diseases?
Wash hands, get vaccines, isolate sick people, wear a mask, use hand sanitizer, open windows, use air purifiers, learn about disease prevention.
Why does handwashing work?
Stops 50% of diarrheal diseases, stops 20–25% of lung infections, removes harmful germs.
How to prevent non-infectious diseases?
Eat healthy, exercise often, don’t smoke or drink too much, reduce stress.
