Infections of the GI Tract Flashcards
What are some common bacterial infections of the GIT?
Salmonella Campylobacter Shigella EHEC C. difficile
What are some common protozoan infections of the GIT?
Giardia
Entamoeba
Cryptosporidium
Hygiene 101: How do you prevent food-borne illness?
Peel it, Cook it, Boil it
What are the virulence factors of E. coli?
- Fimbriae (allow for colonization)
- Adhesins (allow for cell invasion)
- Toxins (endo=part of cell; or exo=secreted such as LT, ST, or Shiga-toxin)
What is STEC?
STEC = EHEC STEC = "Shiga Toxin producing E. coli"
What does the O157:H7 refer to?
The serotype of E. coli:
O157 is the somatic antigen
H7 is the flaggelar antigen
What is the recommended treatment of EHEC?
Supportive measures;
Do not give Abo due to risk of HUS.
What is the reservoir for Salmonella typhi?
Humans (not other animals)
What are the main virulence factors of Salmonella typhi?
- Vi capsular antigen (inhibits phagocytosis)
What is the treatment of Salmonella typhi?
Antibiotics - based on susceptibility - increasing resistance especially to Cipro
What are clinical symptoms associated with Salmonella typhi?
- Gastroenteritis (Diarrhea &/or constipation)
- Typhoid fever (invasion of Peyers patches in gut, then blood –> fever, rash, headache, ileum perforation)
- May be asymptomatic
What is the reservoir for campylobacter?
Poultry - chicken
What are the clinical symptoms of campylobacter?
- Diarrhea
- Reactive arthritis
- Guillain Barre syndrome (ascending paralysis)
What is the treatment for Campylobacter?
It’s self-limiting; therefore, no Abo tx unless severe or immunocompromised.
Give an overview of the Giardia lifecycle
Eat in cyst form;
Exits in feces in trophozoite form and cyst form;
Trophozoites do not survive in the environment;
Giardia is a cyst in its infective stage.
