- Encapsulated bacteria (pneumococcous) like H. influenzae, Nisseria m., Streptococcous p.
- Pneumovax, Hib, meningococcal
- Amoxicillin, usually for lifetime (exceptions are patients <16 years old who often stop after 2yrs of ABX)

Gram positive “Pops” = Purple
Gram negative = Pink
Crystal Violet, then decolorize wash, then Safrin
Positive retains violet stain because it has a cell wall
