Infection + Response P1 Flashcards
Paper 1
Anaesthetic
A drug that stops all pain sensation and can be local or general.
Antibiotic
A group of medicines
Antigen
A protein on the surface of a pathogen that your antibodies can recognize as foreign.
Antiseptic
A substance applied to the skin or another surface to destroy pathogens.
Antitoxin
A protein produced by your body to neutralise harmful toxins produced by pathogens.
Binary Fission
How bacteria reproduces.
Cilia
Tiny hair like projections from ciliated cells that waft mucus out of the gas exchange system.
Communicable
A disease which can be transmitted from one organism to another.
Double blind trial
A medical experiment in which the patients and doctors do not know who has been given the drug and who has been given a placebo.
Efficacy
How effective a drug is
Infectious
A pathogen that can easily be transmitted
Insecticide
A chemical that kills insects.
Lysozymes
Antibacterial enzymes found in your tears to prevent eye infections.
Malaria
Type of pathogen + how it is spread
Protist
Spread via a vector (mosquitos)
Placebo
A ‘fake’ pill or injection which contains no active substances and has only physiological effects.
Vaccine
A medicine containing antigens from a dead or innactive pathogen that triggers a low level immune response.
Vector
An animal that spreads a communicable disease.
What are the 4 types of pathogen?
- Fungi
- Protist
- Virus
- Bacteria
How do viruses cause harm to the body?
They enter a healthy cell, take control of it and make them burst. (Airborne)
What do bacteria do?
- Release toxins
- Reproduce by binary fission
Measles
Symptoms + type of pathogen
- Cause a rash/fever
- Virus
Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)
Symptoms, type of pathogen + how it is treated
- Plant discolouration
- Virus
- Remove infected leaves
HIV
Symptoms, risks, type of pathogen, how to treat it
- Fatigue
- If left untreated, it can lead to AIDs
- Virus
- Antiretroviral drugs
Anti - Against
Retro - Fashion movement
Viral - Virus
Examples of bacterial diseases
- Gonorrhea
- Salmonella
