Infection Prevention and Management Flashcards
What are leukocytes?
White blood cells
What is the normal range for leukocytes?
5,000-10,000/mm3
What does a high leukocyte count indicate?
Inflammation or possible infection
What does a low leukocyte count indicate?
Immunocompromised state (possibly d/t chemotherapy, drugs for transplants, or HIV)
What are associated s/s with a fever?
Increase metabolic rate
Possible increased HR and RR
What is included in cellular immunity?
Mostly T-lymphocyte activity
What is included in humoral immunity?
B lymphocytes produce antibodies
What is active immunity?
when the immune host immune system creates antibodies
What is passive immunity?
when a host is given antibodies
What are the types of changes involved in the inflammatory response?
vascular and cellular changes
Most infections result from decreased host defenses rather than from the virulence of infectious agents. T or F
True
When the physical or chemical defenses are compromised bacteria colonize and cause an infection.
What are the types of infections?
Local
Systemic
Acute
Chronic
Sepsis
Healthcare-associated infections
What are the steps of infection?
Incubation
Prodromal
Acute phase of illness
Convalescent period
Communicable disease
