Why do we use infection P and C
Prevent spread of infection to people. Reduces cost to patient and hospital.
How is infection P and C done
Hand hygiene and PPE(following standard precautions and transmission based precautions)
What is standard precaution
Taken for every patient based on risk of exposure.
If going to be exposed to blood wear gloves.
If exposed to vomit or diarrhea wear gown.
PPE
Gowns, masks, sterile gloves, unsterile gloves, face shields, goggles
What is transmission based precautions and types
Are based on how pathogen spreads.

Spread by touching people or surfaces.
Use gloves.

Don’t travel far. Includes coughing and sneezing.

Tiny particles that travel in the air.
Precautions include- N95, room with hepafiltration system, negative pressure room, and door closed.
Travels through vents.
Ex: pulmonary tb, smallpox, and flu.
Hand washing
Check for cuts-bandage if needed
Check for rings
Make sure sleeve rolled up
Make sure clothes does not touch sink
Wash hand for 15-20 secs

Wash hands before putting on gloves and after taking it off
