Infection Control And Vitals Flashcards
The procedure for reducing the number of organisms present and preventing transfer of organisms
Medical asepsis
The absence of pathogenic microorganisms
Asepsis
Prevent and control infection and its spread
Standard precautions
Rate of breathing regular but abnormally slow. Less than 12 breaths/min
Bradypnea
Rate of breathing is regular but abnormally rapid. More than 20 breaths/min
Tachypnea
Respirations are labored, increased in depth, and increased in rate (greater than 20 breaths/min)
(Occurs normally during exercise)
Hyperpnea
Respirations cease for several seconds. Persistent cessation results in respiratory arrest
Apnea
Rate and depth of respirations increase. Hypocarbia sometimes occurs.
Hyperventilation
Respiratory rate abnormally low, and depth of ventilation is depressed. Hypercarbia sometimes occurs
Hypoventilation
Respiratory rate and depth are irregular, characterized by alternating periods of apnea and hyperventilation. Respiratory cycle begins with slow shallow breaths that gradually increase to abnormal rate and depth. Pattern reverses breathing slows and becomes shallow, climaxing in apnea before respiration resumes
Cheyne- Stokes respiration
Respirations are abnormally deep, regular and increased in rate
Kussmaul’s respirations
Respirations are abnormally shallow for two or three breaths followed by irregular period of apnea
Biot’s respiration
