Nosocomial infection
Infection contracted in healthcare setting
HBV
Hepatitis B most frequently contracted Laboratory Nosocomial infection.
Direct contact transmission
Pathogen transferred from an infected individual to you e.g. Blood 2 blood
Best way to break chain of transmission
Wash hands. It’s very effective in stopping the transmission of blood borne pathogens.
Blood borne pathogens
Microbes such as viruses/bacteria are carried in the blood and can cause disease in people.
OSHA
Occupational Safety and Health Admin hey require all health care personnel exposed to blood and bodily fluids must receive a vaccination series against HBV
Latex sensitivity
A physical hazard
Needle disposal
Needles and all sharps go in puncture-proof containers without recapping. Never recap.
If needle container is overflowing
Remove and report.
Exposure to blood
Wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and running water 15 minutes. Report to supervisor. Fill out exposure report form.
