Explain Infection Control
Methods used to eliminate or reduce the transmission of infectious organisms from one individual to another
What do federal agencies do?
Set guidelines for the manufacture, sale, and use of equipment and chemical ingredients
Monitor safety in the workplace and place limits on the types of services you can perform in a salon
What do state agencies do?
Regulate licensing, enforcement, and your conduct while on the job
What is OSHA? What do they do?
Occupational Safety and Health Administration : (FEDERAL AGENCY) regulate and enforce safety and health standards to protect employees in the workplace ALSO handling, mixing, storing disposing of products, general safety in the workplace and your right to know about hazardous ingredients.
What is the EPA? What do they do?
Environmental Protection Agency: (Federal Agency) registers all types of disinfectants used in the U.S.
Certifies that the disinfectant will be effective against the pathogens listed on the label
What are State Regulatory Agencies?
Licensing agencies, state boards, commissions, and health departments. Procedures that protect health and safety during services and enforcement
Laws are written by?
Both federal and state legislatures, to determine scope of practice and establish guidelines for regulatory agencies
What are the modes of infection transmission?
Direct Transmission, Indirect Transmission, Airborne Transmission & Respiratory Droplet
Disinfectants must be effective against what? ( at a minimum)
Bacteria, Viruses and Fungi
What is the first defense against transmission of infection?
Washing hands
Explain bacteria
Pathogenic(harmful) or non-pathogenic (harmless) single celled microorganisms that have plant and animal characteristics and can exist almost anywhere
Inflammation is characterized by:
Redness, heat, pain and swelling
What is pus?
Fluid containing white blood cells, bacteria, and dead cells. A by-product of the infectious process.
What is a systemic infection?
An infection that has spread throughout the entire body
Explain MRSA
Responsible for food poisoning, toxic shock syndrome and some flesh eating diseases. Can be highly resistant to antibiotics
