Infection Control 1-3 Flashcards
4 types of microbes
Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, and protozoa
Examples of Bacteria
Strep throat, Narcotizing Factitious, and Meningitis
Examples of Viruses
Hepatitis, AIDS, Herpes and, Influenza
Examples of Fungi
Tinea Capitus (Ringworm) [Yeast], and Aspergillus (Lung infection) [ Mold]
Examples of Protozoa
Malaria and Toxoplasmosis
What is a fomite?
contaminated objects
Is E.coli always disease producing? Why / Why not.
No, not always because it is helpful when in the gut but anywhere else is harmful.
Chain of Infection
Pathogenic microbe, Reservoir, Portal of exit, Mode of transmission, Portal of entry , susceptible host
What happens if chain of Infection is broken?
The infection cannot spread
Local vs. Systemic infection which one is more deadly and why
Local infections are contained to one are of the body and Systemic are through the bloodstream in the whole body. Systemic are more deadly because you cant contain them to one area
Pathogenic vs. Non Pathogenic
Pathogenic microbes are harmful to the body and Non Pathogenic microbes are helpful or neutral to the body
What is Nosocomial
A disease that came from the hospital
Bacteria Classifications
Shapes and Arrangements
Bacteria shapes
Coccus (Cocci) Spherical or round, Bacillus (Bacilli) Straight rod, Spirillum ( Spirilla) Spiral, Corkscrew or slightly curved
Bacteria Arrangements
Single, Pairs (Diplo-), Chains (strepto-) and, Clusters (staphylo-)
