What are pathogens?

Virus, bacteria, protists, fungi
What do pathogens do?
Pathogens infect plants and animals.
How can pathogens spread?
Pathogens can be spread by direct contact, water or by air.
What are communicable diseases?
Communicable diseases are diseases that can be passed from one person to another.
What are communicable diseases caused by?
Pathogens
Bacteria divide rapidly, what is this called?
Binary fission
Why can’t viruses be treated by antibiotics?
Because the virus is inside the cell, for the antibiotics to kill the virus it has to also kill the cell which causes problems.
How does the virus get it’s genetic material into the host cell?
The virus injects it’s genetic material.
How do the new viruses get out of the host cell?
The host cell bursts (lyses)
What type of pathogen is the Zika virus?
Viral / Virus
How is the Zika virus transmitted?
Through the bite of an infected Aedes Mosquito
How can the Zika virus be prevented?
- Use insect repellent
- Use mosquito nets
- Wear loose clothing
What are some symptoms of the Zika virus?
A headache
High temperature
Sore, red eyes
Swollen joints
An itchy rash
Why is the Zika virus such an issue?
There is no treatment
