Infection And Response Flashcards
What are pathogens?
Microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease
What does communicable mean?
Infectious
What are bacteria
Microorganisms that can reproduce rapidly your body causing disease
What are viruses
NOT CELLS much smaller (1/100th of a bacteria cell) rapidly reproduce and replicate themselves. Causing diseases
How do viruses work?
Live inside your cells
Cell will burst releasing new viruses
Cell damage is what makes you feel ill
What are protists
Single celled eukaryotes
How do protists work?
Live on or in other organisms and can cause them damage.transferred by a vector that doesn’t get diseased. (Malaria and mosquitoes)
What are fungi?
Some are single celled
Others have body which is made up of thread like structures.
How do fungi work
The thread like structures can grow and penetrate human skin causing diseases.
What are the 3 ways pathogens can be spread?
Water
Air
Direct contact
What can plants also be affected by?
Fungi, bacteria, viruses (plant) and protists
What are 4 viral diseases
Measles
HIV
Tobacco mosaic virus
Covid
What is 1 fungal disease
Rose black spot (plants only)
What is one disease caused by protists
Malaria
What are 2 bacterial diseases
Salmonella
Gonorrhea
