Infant Reflexes Flashcards
Rooting Reflex
Onset: 28 weeks
Integrates 3 Months
stroke upper lip/cheek> infant moves mouth towards the stimuli to find food
suck/swallow reflex
Onset: 28 weeks
Integrates: 2-5 Months
Place finger in mouth> strong rhythmic sucking
Traction Reflex
Onset: 28 weeks
Integrates 2-5 Months
Pull baby up by forearms to sit> head lag, complete flexion of UE
**enhances child’s ability to hold onto mother when being pulled and prepares for voluntary control of grasping
Moro Reflex
Onset: 28 weeks
Integrates: 4-6 Months
rapidly drop head backwards> first arm extension/abduction/hand opening, then arm flexion and adduction
**startle reflex
***helps develop extensor tone
Plantar Grasp
Onset: 28 weeks:
Integrates: 9 Months
Apply pressure to infant’s ball of foot> toe flexion
*** provides input to the sole of the foot, prepares the baby for standing
If not integrated: foot positioning is difficult, hypersensitive to touch, gravitational insecurity when standing, difficult to maintain balance
Galant
Onset: 32 weeks
Integrates: 2 Months
in prone suspension, stoke or tap one side of spine from neck to bottom> lateral flexion of stimulated side
***facilitates trunk stabilization and balance necessary for creeping and crawling , helps facilitate hip movement and ROM in preparation for crawling
ATNR
Onset: 37 weeks
Integrates: 4-6 Months
supine, turn infant’s head- face side extension, skull side flexion
***hand eye coordination, promotes visual and hand movement, visual attn, decreases in rolling
If retained: limits in hand eye coordination, asymmetrical movement positioning of arms,
-hold things, bring BUE to midline, holding objects with 2 hands, limits in visual tracking, handwriting,
Palmar
Onset 37 weeks
Integrates: 4-6 Months
place finger in palm- grasping reflex,
Tonic Labrynthine Supine
Onset: 37 weeks
Integrates: 6 months
increased extensor tone
Tonic Labrynthine Prone
Onset: 37 weeks
Integrates: 6 Months
increased flexor tone
Landau
Onset: 3-4 Months
Integrates: 12-24 Months
Hold infant in prone suspension
**complete extension of head, extremities,
-helps regulate tone and promotes prone extension
STNR
Onset: 4-6 Months
Integrates: 8-12 Months
infant in crawling position, extend the head, flexion of hips/knees, flex the head, extension of hips/knees
***preparation for crawling
Neck on Body Righting
Onset: 4-6 months
Integrates: 5 years
place infant in supine, turn the head to one side
***infant will log roll to to maintain alignment with head
helps facilitate rolling
body righting on body
Onset: 4-6 Months
Integrates: 5 years
infant in supine> flex 1 hip/knee toward the chest
**infant with segmental rolling of upper trunk to maintain alignment
***promotes trunk and spinal rotation, preparation for sitting and quadruped
Labryhthine/ Optical Head Righting
Onset: Birth - 2 months
hold infant up
-tilt the head> infant maintains upright positioning of the head
Downward Parachute
Onset- 4 months
hold infant vertically
lower to a supporting surface, extension of lower extremity
Forward Parachute
Onset- 6-9 months
rapidly drop infant forward> extension of neck and upper extremity
sideward parachute
onset: 7 months
bring infant to the side> arm extension/abduction to the side
backward parachute
Onset: 9-10 Months
backwards arm extension or extension to 1 side, spinal rotation
Prone Tilting
5 months
raise 1 side> curves towards the raised side with abduction and extension of UE and LE
Supine tilting
7-8 months
raise 1 side, curves towards the raised side with ab and ex of UE and LE
***promotes sitting balance
Quadruped Tilting
9-12 Months
raise 1 side, cuves towards raised side with ab and ex of UE and LE
***important for postural alignment
standing tilting
12-21 months
same as other tilting
**important for standing and walking
