Inequality - Feminism Flashcards
Who are the feminists that work on Social Inequality?
Sue sharpe, Benton, Sylvia Walby, Heaton and Lawson.
Who was Sue Sharpe?
Sue Sharpe was a Liberal Feminists. Liberal feminists believe with the right social policy, we can gradually work towards equal opportunities between genders.
What did Sue Sharpe theorise?
That the Patriarchy is coming to an end. Due to woman’s changed aspirations from the 70s to the 90s. Women are now prioritising education and careers, all that society needs to do is reduce the barriers for this to happen.
What could society do to help women?
Shared Maternity leave between both partners, and the equal pay act.
So what did Sue Sharpe believe?
That women are affected by the patriarchy, but it’s getting better.
What are some evaluations of Sue Sharpe?
1) Beay Francis would agree with this, and had similar findings in their own work.
2) Radical feminists see liberals as acting too slow. It took 50 years to see a greater pay equality.
Who was Benston?
A Marxist Feminist. Working on free domestic labour.
What did Benston theorise?
The subordination of women is directly linked to their position where they stand within a capitalist society.
Women provided free domestic labour for capitalism by raising the next generation, and taking care of workers.
How do women provide a reserve army of labour?
Women were finally wanted for work while men were at war fighting. But were fired in recession, this showed that the capitalist society viewed women as disposable.
What are the evaluations of Benston?
1) Surely if women competed for work, capitalism would benefit.
2) Walby says that women not working harms capitalism.
What did Sylvia Walby theorise?
The Dual Systems Approach. That Capitalism, racism, and the patriarchy all work alongside each other to exploit women.
What ways did Sylvia Walby identify that women are discriminated against?
Paid work: The ideology of employers; A women’s place is in the home; sexual discrimination in the workplace.
The state: A lack of public or government support in terms of legislation (laws). Female victims in court aren’t protected or believed enough.
Sexuality: Women’s sexuality is a double standard, seen as attractive in pornography but disgusting in real life situations.
What are some evaluations of Walby?
1) Her theory is very holistic, covering many aspects. But this makes it harder to find a solution to the issues Walby presents.
2) It’s hard to create useful or helpful policies for women based off of this.
Who was Sylvia Walby?
A Radical feminist. Radical feminists demand more significant and immediate change, but share liberal feminists views.
Who were Heaton and Lawson?
Marxist feminists, marxist feminists believe the hidden curriculum and capitalism work against women to create an unbalanced and oppressive society.
