What were the sociologists that studied feminism?
Heidensohn, Walby, Carlen, Adler, and Archer
What did Heidensohn theorise?
Women commit low levels of crime due to tough levels of social control
Where did Heidensohn suggest women faced this?
At home, in the workplace, and in public.
What are the evaluations of Heidensohn?
- Mcrobbie applied this idea to female youths and bedroom culture.
- Outdated, women have more freedom to offend today.
- Pollak argued that actually, women are treated more leniantly
What did Walby suggest?
Women are disadvantaged in several ways through patriarchal society, and more needs to be done to protect them.
What do the police do?
Police do not intervene and courts do not prosecute men for harming women, women then become fearful to report crime.
What are the evaluations of Walby?
- Very holistic
- Theories do not show a clear way to actually control crime
What did Carlen do?
Carlen studied in prisons, on the Gender-Class deal.
What did Carlen find?
Working class women are generally led to conform through the promise of two types of rewards or deals:
- The class deal: Women who work will be offered material rewards
- The gender deal: Promises the same by conforming to gender and family roles
