Inequality Flashcards

A

Inequality remains a major challenge for cities around
the world in the twenty-first century. Indeed, the gap
between rich and poor can be far greater within a city
than across a whole country.

The inequalities tend to
exist in terms of access to job opportunities, education,
housing and basic public services such as water and
sanitation. In many poorer cities, for example, adequate
water and sanitation services are primarily channelled
to upper- and middle-class neighbourhoods, while low income neighbourhoods depend on unsafe water wells and lack of waste disposal also live in overcrowded accommodation
