Some argue that a key feature of cities in Asia, Africa
and South America is the increasingly large wealth gap
between rich and poor residents, known as economic
inequality. In Mumbai, this stark contrast can be seen
where the world’s most expensive home towers over
one of the largest slum areas of the city. Antilia is the
27-storey home of Mukesh Ambani, chairman of a
global energy conglomerate and estimated to be worth
over $35 billion. Within a short distance of the house
is Byculla, an area inhabited by some of Mumbai’s
nine million slum dwellers. Most people here survive
on less than $2 a day.
