Inequalities Flashcards
{x: x<1}
The set of values of x in which x is less than one.
{x: x>1} ∩ {x: x< 3}
The set of values of x in which it is bigger than 1 but smaller than 3 (as those to equalities are influenced by the intersection symbol)
if you were to see something along the lines of {x: x<1} what would it be?
Function notation.
If you were solving a quadratic inequality and you got down to the final 2 numbers what do you do?
Find a value that’s either within or out of the range. once you have subbed it into the original inequality if it gives you false information such as “1>3” then you want the final inequality to not include that section and also vice versa. Top Tip! If sensible try and pick 0 or (0,0) as it will easily get rid of a lot of numbers.
if some idiot decided to represent an equality as an arrow with a circle on one end, what would it mean if that circle is coloured in?
It would also include that number.
if some idiot decided to represent an equality as an arrow with a circle on one end, what would it mean if that circle just an empty circle?
It would not include that number.
Are those idiotic inequality circle ended arrows always an arrow?
Nope! sometimes it’s just a line with a circle on either end.
In an inequality graph would would a dotted line mean?
it does not include this number?
In an inequality graph would would a non-dotted line mean?
It’s doing the number a solid by letting it in.
