INDUSTRY TRENDS Flashcards
Migrating to the Cloud
While the cloud is becoming a viable option for storing data, really only 30-35% of equipment might actually go to the cloud. There is public
vs. private cloud, and with public cloud (say Amazon), you’ll have multiple organizations’ applications running on and using the same
servers/storage, which means there is unpredictability around when performance (when you need it) might be at risk. For private clouds,
you have your own space, but it is incredibly expensive, particularly for intensive computing. With public clouds, there may be significant
data security issues (running your applications alongside other organizations applications). The conversation, however, is much more
about the real costs of migrating in and out of the public cloud. The hidden costs associated with using large public clouds can be
significant, and once you commit to using public cloud, it’s much harder to move your work back on prem if costs or performance don’t
meet expectations. Our role is to help them understand what workloads make sense to move to the cloud vs. maintaining on premise.
Often a hybrid solution is the best and being able to use public cloud for lower-intensive applications/computing, can work well.
We’ve been feeling pressure to keep up with recent trends and
move a lot of our equipment, even though we’re not sure if it will best meet our needs. We figured it would at least be a cost savings though over buying new servers/storage?
Moving applications to the cloud can provide significant (and often hidden) expense, performance, and security risks if not assessed thoroughly.
We can work with you to create and implement a hybrid strategy, allowing you to maintain onsite when it makes sense for your financial and performance goals.

CONTEXT
Many organizations
believe shifting from
CapEx (buying onprem
equipment) to Opex
(leasing cloud space) is
the way to go, but it can
quickly add up. By offering
a hybrid solution through
TPM, the combination of
CapEx and Opex is often
significantly lower,
allowing them to reinvest
in new equipment over
time.

DISRUPTIVE TRUTHS
Industry trends are constantly on the mind of IT organizations, wanting to both stay ahead of the curve and ensure
that their data centers are both secure and highly productive. We have the opportunity to advise and clarify what’s
happening around these trends.
