That most regulatory bodies try to protect citizens while furthering interests of consumers and because of technological advancements it has made it difficult to regulate media with how expansive the internet is.
Who regulates TV within the UK?
Ofcom - their role is to outline rules tv programmes must follow, take complaints from the audience, have power to give monetary fines to producers and tv stations.
How does Netflix regulate it’s content?
Netflix is one of the first streaming services to self regulate - they follow BBFC age ratings and content advisories for all it’s content.
How is Black Mirror regulated to protect citizens while simultaneously furthering interests of consumers?
Black Mirror is given an age rating of 18 and content advisories of language, sexual violence references and injury detail while providing a description of what the show is and its genres.
What are the difficulties of regulating Black Mirror?
It can accessed by anyone with a profile despite the age ratings - However, Netflix does offer parental controls. It also does not apply to the watershed as it is not being programmed but instead available at any time.
