- sale of print copies is steadily falling
- advertising revenue is falling
- soaring newspaper costs
hit profits due to inflation
how are newspapers protecting themselves from economic decline?
some have introduced subscriptions for readers to access their digital products to secure wider income
who is the press run by?
‘a very small group of very right wing media moguls who regent the status quo of which they are part’
what is production, distribution and circulation of newspapers heavily affected by?
the newspapers political stance - for example RW newspapers, typically broadsheets are targeted towards middle/upper class. they often contain serious stories with formal language. whereas LW newspapers such as the daily mirror perceive stories in a very different light.

criteria of news
threshold - bigger story the more likely it is to get into the news
negativity - news focusing on bad events is more exciting and interesting than good news
unexpectedness - an event that is a shock or out of the ordinary
proximity - the closer to home the story is the more interested the reader will be
continuity - stories that are already in the need and continue to run with updates as new aspects to the story appear
unambiguity - events that are easy to report and not complex will be higher in the agenda for some papers
who use to regulate the newspaper industry and why did they stop?
press complaints commission - PCC
they were severely criticised in the light of the phone hacking scandal
who is the new regulatory model?
IPSO (independent press standards organisation) who regulate over 1500 print + 1100 online
what do IPSO do?
deal with complaints about breaches of the editorial code of practice
provide advice for editors/journalists
give support with unwanted press attention or harassment issues
what is distribution?
the link between the producer and the audience refers to all the strategies used in the release, marketing and promotion of the product
what is production?
the understanding of the process and steps necessary to complete a media production
why is contemporary digital media difficult to regulate?
such a vast amount of news being released but strict guidelines are quite obvious / rigid
