- Population increase due to better style of living and larger workforce
- Overseas trading was growing due to merchants took trade overseas
- Improvement in agriculture → better food quality
- Improvement in transport → development from 1660-1750: canal, roads and railways were built

- 1853 → US moved expedition to Japan by Commodore Matthew Perry
- Japanese shogun´s inspired by US show of force
1854 → Perry returned to Edo Bay with double the amount of ships - Worries about the US attacking, Japan agreed to a treaty

Foreign traders began to come to Dubai as they declared that they wouldn´t have tax (1892) - 1930s Dubai → recession and subsequent depression and the pearl industry fell
- Dirham became the official currency in 1973
- By 1980s Dubai wanted to become a tourist destination and Emirates airlines was made
- UAE united in 1971
