What happened to Britain during the Industrial Revolution?
There was rapid growth of towns and new diseases like cholera and typhoid spread more easily in the dirty conditions created.
What happened to people’s attitudes because of the enlightenment and the scientific revolution?
They were still religious, but saw God less as something that was constantly getting involved with the lives of individuals by punishing them.
What was the idea of Spontaneous Generation that people generally believed in 1800?
That when matter (e.g. food) became mouldy, it magically gave birth to animalcules.
Did people still believe in miasma at this time?
Yes, this was something that continued right through from medieval times. Lots of people began to believe in the theory of contagion that had first been written down in the Renaissance time period.
Were humoural treatments still popular?
Doctors used it to try to keep people alive longer, for example Lord Melbourne who was a Prime Minister during this time period was bled a lot after he had a stroke.
When did Pasteur published germ theory?
- It corrected spontaneous generation and made the scientific link between germs and diseases.
How did Koch and Tyndall help with wider acceptance of the germ theory?
I.Lister developed a way of killing infection during surgery using carbolic spray. His methods were developed from germ theory.
II.Tyndall wrote a paper that argued germ theory combined with Lister’s success in reducing infection was enough to prove germ theory was scientifically correct.
