Industrial dust diseases Flashcards
What is Coal worker’s Pneumoconiosis
Macrophages ingest coal dust and then die, releasing enzymes and causing fibrosis
Coal worker’s Pneumoconiosis clinical features
Asymptomatic but often co-existing bronchitis
CXR shows multiple round opacities (1-10mm) especially in upper zone
Coal worker’s Pneumoconiosis management
Avoid exposure
Treat bronchitis
Compensation
What is progressive massive fibrosis
CWP progression causes this
Progressive massive fibrosis features
Progressive dyspnoea
Fibrosis
Cor pulmonale eventually
Progressive massive fibrosis CXR
Bilateral upper-mid zone fibrotic masses developing from periphery to hilum
What is Caplan’s syndrome
Association between RA, pneumoconiosis and pulmonary rheumatoid nodules
What is silicosis
Inhalation of silica (fibrogenic)
Silicosis associated jobs
Metal mining
Quarrying
Pottery/ceramic manufacturing
Silicosis management
Avoid exposure
Claim compensation
Asbestosis clinical features
Progressive dyspnoea
Clubbing
Fine end-inspiratory crackles
Causes pleural plaques which inc risk of bronchial adenocarcinoma/ mesothelioma
Asbestosis management
Symptomatic
