Industrial Flashcards
Volumetric productivity
The amount of product produced per unit volume of production bioprocessor per unit time
High vp means
Minimisation of the contribution of fixed costs to the cost of the product
7 criteria of an ideal microbe
1) simple nutrional characteristics
2) optimum temp above 40 degrees
3) reaction of organism with equipment
4) stability and ability to be genetically manipulated
5) efficient product production
6) readily harvested from medium
7) toxicity
5 storage methods
1) lyophilisation
2) dried cultures
3) glycerol suspensions
4) cryobeads
5) agar slope culture
A constitutive mutant
A mutant organism that continuously produces a protein due to a mutation in the regulatory gene, which is always expressed or impossible to turn off
Chemostat culture
Chemical environment is static. Fresh medium is continuously added while liquid culture is continuously removed to keep the culture volume constant
Progressive control
Build up of one end product causes a partial switch off. Further switch off occurs if there is build up at the end of another branch and so on
Concerted control
There is no switch off unless products at the end of several branches build up. Complete switch off then occurs
Bacteria used for the production of Quorn
Fusarium venenatum
Biotransformation
Use of microbial cells as catalysts to transform substrate
A bioprocesser/fermenter
A vessel and ancillaries designed to facilitate the growth and/or activities of microorganisms under controlled conditions
