Inductors and Capacitors (Week 3) Flashcards
What is a Farad?
Measure of Capacitance.
microfarad = 10 ^- 6 farads
nanofarad = 10 ^-9 farads
picofarad = 10 ^ -12 farads
Series capacitors
Take the overall reciprocal of capacitors in reciprocation..
1/ Ctotal = (1/c1 + 1/c2 + 1/c3…)
Parallel capacitors
Add capacitors together…
Ctotal = c1+c2+c3+c4…
Constant Current Integrator
When I (Current) is constant and C (Capacitance) is a fixed value, then there will be a line ramp slope (I/C) of charge until vCap is reached.
I = C * delta V/ Delta t
Vcap = I delta t/ C
Since I/C is a constant….
Vcap = KdeltaT
To find a time constant in charge and discharge times.
RC integration for a charge and RC differentiation for discharge
RC integration + differentiation formula
Tt = RC (Resistance * Capacitance)
Charge Curves
Discharge Curves
The first time constant has the most dramatic change
Tt 1 = Vsource* (.63)
Tt 1 = Vsource* (.37)
Electron theory of Magnetism
An electron is steady state has an electrostatic field. When put into motion, it creates a magnetic field - thus, electromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel and cobalt. (Electric and magnetic fields are 90 degrees out of phase with one another)
Inductance
The ratio of magnetic flux (phi) to the electrical current (I)
L = phi / I
Measured in Henry’s
Time constant for inductance
T = L/R (L = in henries and R in Ohms)
Inductors in Series
1L +2L +3L…
Inductors in Parallel
1/ Ltotal = (1/1L +1/2L…)
