individual vs situational explanations Flashcards
what are the main principles and concepts of the individual v situational debate?
individual : some studies look for the explanation of behaviour being within the individual
situational : other studies look for the explanation of behaviour as a result of the situation a person is in
what are the studies associated with the individual side of the debate?
casey : brain activity is affecting self control for example low delayers have less activity in the inferior frontal gyrus
what are the studies associated with the situational side of the debate?
milgram : the presence of the authority figure leads to increased obedience for example 65% went to the full 450V
what is a strength of the individual debate?
predictions or interventions can be made since the behaviour is down to the individual
what is a weakness of the individual debate?
socially sensitive as you’re essentially blaming someone for their own behaviour, this can lead to labelling and stigmatisation
what is a strength of the situational debate?
much easier to change the environment
what is a weakness of the situational debate?
reductionist, only looks at the situation as being the cause of behaviour
