What is searching
A thorough examination of a certain feature in an area.
What is scanning
A general and systematic examination of an area to detect any unusual or significant object or movement
What is positive space
Space taken up by solid objects such a buildings, trees, signs, and vehicles
What is negative space
The space in between positive space
How long does it take for eyes to adapt to night conditions

What is regularity
Square, rectangular, oval or straight line; these do not occur naturally and are indications of man made activity
What is transference
Movement of dirt or debris from one location to another in order to disguise activity; this includes the placement of soil or vegetation emplaced to conceal an IED
During a halt, at what distances do you check?
O/5/25/200 meters
What are you looking for during 5 meter check?
Abnormalities, disturbed earth, suspicious objects, loose bricks in walls or security ties
What are you looking for during 25 meter check?
Potential IED indicators or anything out of the ordinary
What are you looking for during 200 meter check?
Possible trigger man, cameraman, snipers
What do you immediately do when an identify an indicator?
Stop movement and identify if any other indicators are present
What are the 5 Cs?
Confirm Clear Check Cordon Control
What does Clear mean?
Ensure all non-essential personnel are out of the immediate threat area
What does Check mean?
Scan continuously in a 360 degree pattern conducting 5’s and 25’s
What does Cordon mean?
Set cordon according to unit SOP/terrain
What does Control mean?
Ensure security remains in place and limit access to the IED threat area to required personnel only
When marking a route, which searcher must mark the safe route?
The lead searcher
What are the 2 ways to mark an IED?
Detailed Marking and Minimal Marking
Describe Detailed Marking
Possible IEDs should be marked with a different marker/color than the safe lane 1m back from the device on a safe path
Describe Minimal Marking
As a last resort, where there is a shortage of material to mark a device, a marker must be placed 1m back from the device
What should you use to mark in areas of high vegetation?
