Hardiness - describes someone who copes well in stressful situations
What are the three aspects of the hardiness personality
Commitment - committed to things in life eg work, relationships. Putting 100% effort into whatever they do and don’t give up.
Challenge- see stressful/ difficult situations as challenges and an opportunity to overcome them and grow.
Control- feel like they’re in control of their lives and less likely to blame external factors for stressful situations. Internal LOC.
Study on hardiness personality

800 male American
assessed stress using SRRS (a measure of life events)
-150 had high stress according to their SRRS scores.
-pp were asked to list the number of illness that they had in this time.
-Some reported high stress but had low illness and some had low stress but high illness.
They then completed a personality tests, which assessed control, commitment and challenge.
Findings
The individuals who had high-stress but low-illness group scored highly on all 3 of the hardiness characteristics
shows -hardiness personality helps you cope with stress.
Evaluation of hardiness personality
✅real life application- in the military they’re screened for hardiness and if it’s low they go into hardiness training.
