What is stress inoculation therapy and who made it

It’s a form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) used to treat stress.
The idea is the change the way we think about the stressor to reduce the stress.
What are the three stages of SIT
1- conceptualisation
2- skill acquisition and rehearsal
3- application phase
What’s stage one
Conceptualisation stage
Meet with therapist and identify situations that cause you stress.
Therapist challenges patients views and believes about situations.
What’s stage two
Skill acquisition and rehearsal phase
Therapist teaches specific skills to help patient deal with their stresses eg positive thinking, relaxation techniques etc
What is stage 3
Application stage
Role play stressful situations and use the skills
Then use them in real life situations- participant and therapist will monitor how well they’re working.
Meichenbaum research support on SIT
21 students -
Get treatment for anxiety
p’s put into three groups
SIT, standard desensitisation and a control group
P’s tested using an anxiety questionnaire.
SIT condition improved the most shows it’s very effective for reducing anxiety.
Evaluation of SIT
✅no side effects as it’s a noninvasive method to treating stress
✅treats stress long term as deals with the root not just the symptoms helps them cope with different stressful situations.
❌only effective is the pp is motivated to do all the sessions and practise the skills taught.
❌expensive and time consuming.
